He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

Molina's most significant contribution to science was his work on the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer, which helps to protect the planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. In the 1970s, Molina and his research partner, Sherwood Rowland, discovered that chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that were widely used in refrigerants, aerosol sprays, and other industrial processes could destroy ozone molecules in the atmosphere. Their groundbreaking research helped to raise awareness of the threat posed by CFCs and led to the adoption of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty to phase out the production of these chemicals.

Molina's work on ozone depletion earned him numerous accolades, including the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995, making him the first Mexican-born scientist to receive the award.
